Student Activities

Associate Degree Nursing Club: Students are offered the opportunity to participate in a student organization focusing on behaviors and attitudes that reflect professionalism within the nursing discipline. Participation is optional and includes activities to support and positively influence the goals of the nursing program, college, and community. Participation includes planning and fundraising for the pinning ceremony at the completion of the nursing program as well as community service activities. Class officers for the first and second year will be elected and include a President, Treasurer/ Secretary, and CAB representatives. 

ADN Nursing Club Student Officers: Students will be elected to represent the Associate Degree Nursing program on campus at the Student Faculty Liaison Committee, and the Nursing Advisory Council (generally the president) during each academic year.  Club officers will be elected each year and an officer team will be elected for year one and year two. The officer team will include president, secretary/treasurer, and CAB representatives.  The CAB representatives will alternate meeting attendance. A CAB representative is required to attend the NJC campus meeting for the College Activities Board that occurs weekly in the Hays Student Center.  

Student-Faculty Liaison Committee:  A committee will be formed comprised of student elected class officers and full-time faculty for year one and year two. The committees focus will be to bring forth student input which encourages student and faculty collaboration in a quality improvement process. 

Several social activities which require the attendance of all students are included in the program. Examples of planned activities include:

  1. Pinning ceremony practice, luncheon, and related activities 
  2. Professional In-services

Mentoring Program: The nursing students will have the opportunity to be part of a nursing mentoring program. Mentoring and supporting new nurses will be a career long responsibility as the student enters the nursing profession, and NJC’s nursing program gives the students the opportunity to develop important skills as the mentee and mentor. Objectives for the mentoring program include the following:

The first year nursing student will:

  • Attend meetings with mentor to discuss success strategies for nursing school such as: time management issues, concerns or difficulties encountered during the first year.
  • Report any concerns or difficulties with mentor to the Life Skills Coach.
  • Engage in student functions to strengthen relationships with 2nd year nursing students.

The second year nursing student will:

  • Provide guidance to the assigned mentee in her/his role as nursing student.
  • Inform Life Skills Coach of any difficulties or concerns with mentee.
  • Cultivate within the mentee, a sense of belonging as part of the NJC nursing program and the nursing profession.
  • Serve as a positive role model of a nursing professional, who exemplifies integrity, ethical principles, caring, and clinical competence.
  • Engage in student functions and be visible to 1st year nursing students.
