Program Admission Policies

Prerequisite Courses 

• ENG 1021 English Composition I
• HPR 1010 Dietary Nutrition or HWE 1050 Human Nutrition
• BIO 2101 Anatomy & Physiology I
• BIO 2102 Anatomy & Physiology II
• PSY 2440 Human Growth & Development

1. All of these prerequisites must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
2. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required for all prerequisites listed above. 
3. All BIO prefixes and/or science courses are valid for 7 years from the time of completion to the start of the Nursing Program.

Note: Only one Human Anatomy and Physiology course has to be completed at the time of applying to the nursing program. The other one has to be completed with a “C” or greater before the start of the program in the fall.

General Education Courses

Students may complete the general education courses below before acceptance into the nursing program or during the nursing program.

• BIO 2116 Pathophysiology
• MAT 1120 Math for Clinical Calculations or higher level math course
• 3 credit social science elective

1. All general education courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
2. All BIO prefixes and/or science courses are valid for 7 years from the time of completion to the start of the Nursing Program. 

Program Acceptance

The following must be completed prior to acceptance into the program:

1. Placement survey or Accuplacer, or SAT/ACT scores or comparable course work to show Math, Reading and English are at college level.
2. A Kaplan Admission Test score.
3. A GPA of 2.5 on all prerequisites is required, and a grade of “C” or better for each prerequisite course.

All students will be admitted provisionally until the following have been completed:

• Satisfactory Criminal Background Check (Not to be done any earlier than 90 days of start date into the program)
• Satisfactory Health statement
• Updated Immunization/Titers
• Negative drug screen
• Current Professional CPR Certificate that is valid for the entire length of the program
• Successful completion of a communication assessment

Competitive Admission Criteria

Applicants for the associate degree nursing program will be evaluated based on a point system. Applicants will be selected based on the total points earned.  Applicants who score 60 points or more by April 1^st deadline will receive preferential consideration.

Grade Point Average on required prerequisites include:

• ENG 1021 English Composition,
• HPR 1010 Dietary Nutrition or HWE 1050 Human Nutrition,
• PSY 2440 Human Growth and Development
• BIO 2101 Anatomy and Physiology I and BIO 2102 Anatomy and Physiology II. 

Minimum GPA must be a 2.5

GPA of 2.5-2.69 = 5 points

GPA of 2.7-2.99 = 10 points

GPA of 3.0-3.59 = 15 points

GPA of 3.6-4.0 = 20 points

Satisfactory Completion of Science General Education Credits

• BIO 2104 Microbiology (4 credits) = 2.5 points
• BIO 2116 Pathophysiology (4 credits) = 5 points

Prior Degree

Associate Degree or higher = 10 points

Certified Nursing Assistant = 5 points

Satisfactory completion of AAA 0072 Jump Start to Nursing = 5 points

Satisfactory Completion of Medical Terminology = 5 points

Nursing preadmission test

Kaplan’s Admissions Test is a tool to determine if students have the academic skills necessary to perform effectively in a school of nursing. The Admissions Test is a 91-question, online, multiple-choice test that evaluates the basic reading, math, writing, and science skills of students seeking entry into a nursing program. 

The date of test must be within one year of the start of the program. 

Score at or below the 34^th percentile = 0 points

Score between 35^th-42^nd percentile = 2.5 points

Score between 43^rd-50^th percentile = 5 points

Score at the 51^st -64^th percentile =10 points

Score at or above 65^th – 84^th percentile = 15 points

Score at or above the 85^th percentile = 20 points

*A score in the science section of the nursing preadmission test at or above the 65^th percentile earns the applicant 5 extra points.

* A score on the critical thinking section of the nursing preadmission test at or above the 65^th percentile earns the applicant 5 extra points.

NJC’s service area = 5 points

Includes the following counties: Logan, Phillips, Yuma, Sedgwick, and Washington counties. Proof of residence is based on domicile (legal, primary residence) of a qualified person in the above counties for the year proceeding the first day of class.
