ADN Nursing Student Handbook 2023-2024

NJC School Closures & Inclement Weather

Before driving to the campus, all staff and students are advised to check the NJC Facebook page, website, Student Email, Text message notices, and local radio announcements regarding possible campus closures.

In the event of a total campus closure, notification will be sent via the emergency notification system through text messages, the NJC website, and announcements on local radio stations. Please do not venture out if the college has announced an official closure.

If the campus is NOT closed, then students are asked to check their student email accounts/D2L for messages from individual instructors as to whether or not specific classes are cancelled. We recognize that some instructors may not be able to make it to campus, depending on the road and weather conditions where they reside. Faculty—please send email/D2L notices to your students if you are not able to make it to campus. Students—please check your emails before you drive to campus. And students, if conditions are not safe for you to drive to campus, please do not venture out. Your safety comes first!

To those students who reside on the NJC campus, food service will still be provided even if the campus is officially closed.

NJC Nursing Program Inclement Weather

NJC Nursing Program encourages all students to use their own judgment during times of severe weather. No absence will be excused due to weather, unless the college is closed, the road is closed, the clinical site is closed, or the instructor is not able to get to class or clinical. Instructors may decide to start class or clinical on a delayed start schedule and students will be notified accordingly of this plan (including times) by the administrative assistant or the instructor.

If a delay in classes is announced by NJC, students are not encouraged, but allowed to be late to clinical if necessary. It is recognized that situations will occur where road conditions are not safe and you might be late to clinical. If you are going to be running late you MUST notify your instructor prior to clinical start time – COMMUNICATION IS KEY.

It is your responsibility to determine if it is unsafe to be on the road. Instructors cannot determine the conditions, your driving experience, or your ability to make it safely to clinical.
