Hyphenate as a compound modifier (i.e., “She works part time. He is a part-time employee.”)

percent

Always spell out in text; do not use the symbol (%). When showing a range of percentages use the word with both numerals (i.e., between 5 percent and 10 percent).

Pete’s Retreat Café

Coffee shop located on first floor of Hays Student Center. Acceptable to shorten to “Pete’s.”

Phillips Whyman Hall

Classroom building located at the intersection of Northeastern Way and Landrum Lane. Often abbreviated to PW (no periods).

Phi Theta Kappa

Honor society for academically eligible students. PTK on second reference.

phone numbers

Do not use parentheses around area codes. Use hyphens or en-dash between number sets. Do not use periods (i.e., 123-456-7891).

Plainsman Pete, Plainswoman Penny

Official mascots of the Northeastern athletic teams. See Athletic Logos.

Poole Hall

Residence hall with double occupancy rooms, and located at 629 Landrum Ln. on the Main Campus. Can hold 74 residents. Use full name on first mention. Can be shorted to Poole in subsequent mentions in the same piece of content. See residence hall.

prerequisite

Requirement that students must meet before they can take a course. Not hyphenated. See co-requisite.

professor titles

Refer to faculty members by their specific titles. Check the Staff Directory for the correct title. The term professor is not acceptable in references to Continuing Education instructors.
