GENERAL EDUCATION
The outcomes of general education are to provide coursework which will help students develop certain capabilities and insights, including the ability to think and to communicate clearly and effectively. In addition, students should be able to formulate valid concepts, analyze arguments, and define and orient themselves to their world. General education should lead to self-understanding and a better understanding of one’s role as a citizen.
General education is “general” in several clearly identifiable ways: it is not directly related to a student’s formal technical, vocational, or professional preparation, it is a part of every student’s course of study regardless of the area of emphasis, and it is intended to impart common knowledge, intellectual concepts, and attitudes, which every educated person should possess.
GUARANTEED TRANSFER COURSES
Colleges and universities in Colorado have identified general education courses in various categories and guaranteed transference to any public two or four-year Colorado college or university. Nearly 200 lower-division general education courses referred to as Guaranteed Transfer (GT) Pathways are approved for guaranteed transfer in 20 subject areas. Northeastern offers many of these courses on campus, which are listed in italics below. If a course is not italicized, it may be available online through Colorado Online, through the Rural College Consortium, or through another Colorado community college. For GTP courses to transfer, the student must successfully complete the course with a C or better grade. Some courses apply to all degrees (A.A., A.S., A.G.S.) and some only apply to Associate of Arts (A.A.) and Associate of General Studies (A.G.S.) degrees. These are indicated in the list below.
Students should work with their advisor to select the general education courses that best fit their program of study. More information on guaranteed transfer courses can be found on the Colorado Department of Higher Education website.
Classes in Italics indicate a course is generally offered at least once every other year. Most are offered every year, but some rotate on an every other year basis with other courses.
