Northeastern sees a bright future in collegiate eSports on campus.
The national profile of eSports' soared to new levels in 2018. Opening day of the Overwatch League brought in more than Thursday Night Football, averaging 280,000 Twitch viewers per minute and maxing out at 437,000 viewers. Throughout 2018, famous Fortnite streamer, Ninja, appeared in videos with high profile artists like Drake and Travis Scott and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. Ninja also is the first eSports athlete to have the honor of being on the cover of ESPN the Magazine.
It seems that more Colleges, like Northeastern, are realizing the value of eSports. Northeastern hopes to eventually offer a Varsity eSports team with scholarship opportunities. Right now, Northeastern supports an eSports club that any student can join. This consist of game nights every week where students come together to test each other's skills or to just relax and game with friends.
