Program Description

The Northeastern Junior College Astronomy Program is a four semester sequence designed to prepare you for entrance into a university level astronomy program.

Points of Distinction

We are poroud to have an outstanding faculty composed of dedicated instructors with expert knowledge in their field of study. Students will be well prepared for the advanced study of astronomy, physics, or mathematics. Our small class size with low student to teacher ratio, makes instruction more personal. In addition to assistance provided by your professors, NJC offers free tutoring for all required subjects in the Comprehensive Learning Center and free math tutoring in the Math Study Room. Northeastern Colorado has relatively dark skies making observations of the celestial sphere possible with minimal interference by light pollution.

Student Activities

The NJC Math and Science Club provides opportunities to socialize with other science students, participate in field trips to locations such as Fulford Cave and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and help with the NJC-North Sterling State Park star parties.

Program Expectations

Upon completion of this program of study, you will have the core science and mathematical knowledge necessary for success in your pursuit of astronomy or other science degrees.  In addition, you will have completed the general education core classes and have earned an Associate of Science Degree.

Facilities

Classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, and a small faculty-to-student ratio helps ensure your success. In contrast to urban college campuses where light pollution hampers astronomical observations, on the plains northeastern Colorado, we still enjoy relatively dark skies.  As part of your astronomy program you will observe the night sky from the NJC Farm using just your eyes, binoculars, and telescopes.

Resources

NJC's Comprehensive Learning Center (CLC) exists to make the most of learners’ educational experience by assisting students in the adjustment to campus life and the rigors of academic study.  The CLC provides a variety of services to improve retention and graduation rates of NJC students, including free tutoring, instruction in developmental studies, Adult Basic Education, academic support, and services for disabled students that are learning-centered, accessible, and effective.

Opportunities for Experience

Hands on and in the field experience prepares students for real life scenarios.
