Program Description

LANGUAGE of BUSINESS:  The Associate of Arts Business Degree (AA) - Accounting Emphasis is designed to equip you with the knowledge and accounting skills to successfully compete in today’s global business environment.  The business world has undergone a transformation creating an enormous demand for accountants.  Accountants at all levels and in all organizations have seen their importance elevated and new opportunities emerge to ensure integrity of financial data and business ethics.  As a result, a wealth of opportunities awaits today’s accounting professional as evidenced by numerous top career rankings in various employer and career surveys.

Individuals who understand accounting are in a position to evaluate business transactions, provide advice concerning economic choices, and assume leadership roles in government and industry.

Points of Distinction

Northeastern offers two different programs of study in Accounting and both can be completed in approximately two years. You can complete the first two years of study at Northeastern obtaining an AA Business degree, then transfer to a four-year university to complete your bachelor’s degree.

The Accounting programs’ core courses include Financial and Managerial Accounting, Tax Accounting, Legal Environment of Business, Introduction to Business, Business Communications, PC Computer Applications, and Micro and Macro Economics. Elective courses include QuickBooks, Excel, Payroll and Cost Accounting, Business Law, Management and Marketing elective courses.

As an NJC accounting student, you will be taught by faculty who are experts in their fields, many currently practicing and have an active CPA license.

Student Activities

As an NJC business student, you will be given the opportunity to join the NJC Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team -a nationally award winning team on our campus!  The NJC SIFE Team take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real business problems making valuable contributions to their campus and community. You can visit the NJC SIFE page, and the www.sife.org website.

Program Expectations

You should consider an accounting career if you enjoy working with numbers and solving mathematical problems, have interpersonal communication skills, and a strong background using computers.

Facilities

Incorporating smart technology in every business classroom and up-to-date computer labs with the latest software, you will learn to perform and communicate as if you were in the “Board Room” at Northeastern.  In addition, a small faculty-to-student ratio at NJC helps ensure your success.

Resources

NJC's Comprehenisve Learning Center (CLC) exists to make the most of learners’ educational experience by assisting students in the adjustment to campus life and the rigors of academic study.  The CLC provides a variety of services to improve retention and graduation rates of NJC students, including free tutoring, instruction in developmental studies, Adult Basic Education, academic support, and services for disabled students that are learning-centered, accessible, and effective.

Opportunities for Experience

You will develop a strong theoretical foundation in accounting principles, integrated with practical, hands-on projects and cases.  You will gain experience using leading software products and learn how to effectively and ethically incorporate accounting strategies into today’s business global environment.

Careers

Career opportunities associated with the four-year bachelor’s accounting degree level may include auditors, tax advisors, financial consultants, computer system consultants, financial analysts, budget and planning analysts, and many other options. Professional degrees can generally be completed in four to five years.
