Elementary Education at NJC

Make a difference!

Perhaps one of the most rewarding careers a student can choose is elementary education!  What huge opportunities teachers - both male and female - have to influence the lives of younger children.

While this employment choice isn't driven by a pay scale, it is the individual who can find a greater purpose in life's work than money who choose to enter this field.  Some special benefits of a teaching career include non-tangibles such as having summers off to spend with family and the pure satisfaction that comes with knowing teaching makes a difference in the lives of others.

The Associate of Arts degree for elementary education at NJC is designed for easy transfer to all four-year institutions.  To earn an AA, students must complete 45 credits of general education and education coursees, along with 15 credits of transfer courses -- a total of 60 credits in two years.  Following is a list of the type of general education classes which need to be completed at NJC:

  • English Composition I & II
  • Public Speaking
  • Math for Elementary Teachers I & II
  • Science of Biology or
  • General College Biology I
  • Physical Geology
  • Introduction to Chemistry I or
  • General College Chemistry I or
  • Conceptual Physics or
  • Algebra-Based Physics I
  • World Regional Geography
  • U.S. History I or II
  • American Government
  • Introduction to Liturature or
  • Masterpieces of Liturature I or II
  • Introduction to Education
  • Child Development

    To become an elementary school teacher, students transfer to a four-year school and complete a B.A. Degree.  Northeastern does have an elementary education  intercollegiate degree program that allows students to complete a B.A. degree on our campus through classes offered by an Colorado Christian University.

    What about clubs?
    NJC has an assortment of clubs and activities, including a very active Future Teachers Club for education majors, where students share common interests and learn more about teaching.

    Academic support
    No kidding (no pun intended), students find all kinds of support at NJC!  From friendly, supportive advisors who mentor students, to the free help available in the Comprehensive Learning Center. there is abundance of academic support. Representatives from four-year schools often visit campus and work with NJC students, providing information about transfer to their programs.
