Students Find Hope

NJC students sitting on stairs.Colorado high school students choosing to attend Northeastern are getting more bang for their buck. The newly incorporated Hope Scholarship is an offer too good to pass up. The Hope Scholarship pays for up to 18 credit hours during freshman year and 12 credits during sophomore year. For a two year 60 credit associate's degree, that's practically half the cost! However, scholarship eligibility can be lost should a student fall below a 3.0 GPA. But by spending a total of 50 hours in the college’s Comprehensive Learning Center (CLC), students can keep the scholarship should their GPA fall below this mark. The CLC is designed to help students succeed in classes.

Uniquely, the scholarship has no official application. Still, students must first and foremost fill out the Free Application for Student Aid at FAFSA.ed.gov in order to ascertain if they meet the financial requirements (generally this means not being grant eligible). Just as importantly, students must also submit high school transcripts from the 6th, 7th, or 8th semesters to the Admissions Office for verification that they meet Hope Scholarship entry GPA standards.

During fall of 2008, 75 freshman and 25 sophomores earned the Hope Scholarship and 37 additional students gained Hope eligibility. Enrollment in the fall semester of 2008 was up ten percent over fall semester a year ago.  For spring semester, enrollment is up 14.15 percent from last year. This ranks NJC currently as the second fastest growing college in the state, trailing only one other college in growth this year.
