Justin Mertens, a prior graduate of Northeastern’s ag diesel and equipment program, brings seven years of solid, on-the-job experience to his new teaching position at NJC. He teaches from experience because he’s been there and done that. He has been in the med/heavy duty diesel equipment repair as well as agricultural repair industry since 2000. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at the college, he also has his own repair business which keeps him business during the summer. Mertens is ASE certified and continues to get training when possible to stay current with the diesel industry. He understands the mechanical, as well as the business side of diesel technology and enjoys sharing this knowledge with others. Mertens has worked hard to develop industry contacts in order to secure an ongoing supply of donated equipment is coming into the training program. He has lined up a number of on-the-job training sites for students in the program. The demand for trained technicians is very strong and many companies are looking to NJC to help them fill their positions with graduates from this program.
