Jamie Cecil - Cope, COAg Communications MajorHaving grown up in a tiny rural community, I found such comfort in knowing I could be at a place like Northeastern Junior College. My parents met at NJC and my older sister graduated from NJC as well. I was excited to continue a family tradition as an NJC plainsman. Tradition is exactly what Northeastern is about. NJC has a tradition of providing students with a valuable life experience. Here, you learn the importance of support, building up your peers, encouraging others to succeed, getting involved and discovering your passions. I’ve heard so many others who’ve come before me talk about the wonderful faculty and staff and the great things that happen on campus. Some of them went to the city, but equally as many have come back to their roots—back to this part of the state and they are doing well. Many of them will say that it was NJC that made the biggest difference in their lives. I’m off to serve as a national FFA officer this year, but I will not forget what I found when I came to Sterling. A great community that really cares about students. Always has. Always will. I was so excited to hear about the Hope Scholarship program. I hope donors realize the important difference they can make in students’ lives. The Hope Scholarship is the beginning of one more great Northeastern tradition! Previous Page |

Sally Castillo - Haxtun, CONursing MajorI was 29 years old, married, and raising two children under five. Everything costs so much. I knew I needed to get more schooling and increase my earning power if my family was going to have much in life. It was a terrifying thought, not just for me, but for all of us-- for mom to go back to school. I knew I wanted a career in nursing but just didn’t know how I was going to financially swing it. |

Zehren Walker - Yuma, COProduction agriculture/ag business majorI chose NJC because I know it has a really good agriculture program. It is close to home and the lower cost was a benefit as well. When I am done with college, my plan is to return back to the Yuma area where I’ll hope to help my older brother who took over the family farm. We grow alfalfa and have some beef cattle. We also work with some neighbors who are really big producers by doing some contract farming as well. I’m really hoping that with what I am learning in college that I will be able to bring some niche marketing ideas to our farm operation. Ultimately, I see myself staying in Yuma where I hope to live and raise a family. |

Jackie Hedlund - Sterling, COElementary Education“I’m a first generation college student. Neither of my parents attended college but it is really important to them that their children get some higher education. Coming from a middle class average family, I’m trying to take the most economical route to a college degree. Having Northeastern Junior College in my home town has meant that I haven’t had to move. I’m able to live at home and that is making my higher education more affordable. Still, it takes a lot of money to make it all happen. I received a few small scholarships and I have a work study job on campus plus another job off campus. I’m also doing volunteer work at a local elementary school to earn hours that will convert to scholarship dollars for me through the AmeriCorp program. It’s a lot to be doing and thinking about in addition to taking a full load of college credits and keeping my grades good. But, I’m determined to make it all work. My plan is to get my teaching degree. I grew up around teachers. My mom works in education. I don’t think there is anything I can do for myself that is more important than finishing college. I wish everyone understood the importance of education and what it can do to change a life for the better.” Previous Page |

Brian Pocock - Ovid, COBusiness Administration MajorRight out of high school, I went to a Nebraska college. I want to play college football and so I signed with that school, only to realize a semester later that it was not a good match for me. I came to Northeastern my second semester. As a business administration major that wants to eventually go on to Colorado State University where I hope to try to be a walk-on for the football team, NJC has been a great place for me for now. I know my classes are going to transfer from here to CSU. I’ve had exceptional teachers at NJC. They’ve helped me realize a number of things about myself which have in turn, made me a better student which I know will be helpful when I move on to the university. I’ve had great facilities to work out in to keep my physical strength good for when I do try out at CSU. I’m here among some of my best high school friends and we have some fun doing things like playing intramural sports at the event center. NJC is a great environment for area students and we are really fortunate to have such a good school right here so close to home. Previous Page |

Brad Abbott - Otis, COPhysical Therapy MajorWhile I was in the library on campus to take the photo for this booklet, I picked up a book that said, ‘you can do it’ and nearby on the same shelf was another book that said, ‘no excuses’. I wanted to use these books in my picture. That’s exactly what I think about Northeastern. This place is totally geared toward making sure you succeed. The message they deliver day after day to the students here is that we each matter and whatever tools and tutoring we need to get through whatever classes will be available. I have friends who went to other colleges and they are struggling. Some of them are in big places where they are just a number. Others went to places where the students’ success just doesn’t seem to be a priority and they are actually wondering if they will ever get through some of their classes. This is a place where your teachers become your friends and eventually will probably be some of your best job references. That’s what I like about NJC—everybody is looking out for me whether I know it or not. My future opportunities are probably endless. From NJC, I can go anywhere I want. But who knows, I may decide to come right back home. Previous Page |

Nicole Benavides - Iliff, COBusiness Administration MajorEducation is so important if you want to get anywhere in the world today. I am the first in my family to even go to college and being and being able to do it right here close to home has been perfect for me. I can’t begin to tell you how much college has changed my life. The friends I have met and the things I have been able to do have just been wonderful. I’m on the Ambassador Team which means that some days I am the one leading the tour to show and tell other visiting students about the campus and the programs and activities. I’m a leader in the Crossroads Christian student organization on campus. I love my teachers and how much they inspire me to do my best. The professional staff on campus is so involved with the students. They know you by name and they help you however they can whether it is figuring out how to pay your bill or making sure you have meaningful things to do when you’re doing your work study job. Clearly, if it hadn’t been for financial aid, education after high school would not have been an option for me. I’m looking forward to all the opportunities that getting a college degree will give me. And, maybe I’ll find them right here. Previous Page |

Melissa Pletcher - Yuma, COPsychology/Law MajorWhen I was a little girl, I had a whole bunch of career choices. But then I developed a passion for arguing, or debating, and I’ve always had something to say. So, becoming an attorney is my goal. Neither one of my parents went to college, but they made it clear to me and my sisters that we would go. Nowadays, it is hard to do anything very significant with your life unless you are educated past high school. I am hopeful to complete my associate’s degree at NJC in three semesters at which time I will go back home and work for awhile to save some money before I move on to CSU. |

Jessica Gerk - Iliff, COAudiology MajorMy older sister—who went to NJC and is now finishing her degree in audiology at the University of Wyoming— and I have this dream that we will open a medical clinic out here in Northeastern Colorado. I really want to specialize in pediatric audiology and perhaps even work with children in the area schools on a regular basis. I’m the youngest of eight children from a farm family. Seven of the eight of us have attended NJC. We’ve all gone to school here mainly because it was close to home and has been an affordable option, but probably just as important to us has been the high quality instruction we’ve been able to get here. This campus allowed us all to make many new friends from all over the state and nation, yet at the same time, we have been among close, familiar people who have really cared about our success. I graduated from a small high school, so being here in small classes was a perfect transition for me. My instructors have been exceptional in their own qualifications and they have taken my success personally. With the solid foundation I’ve gotten here. I know I will be totally prepared for the tough classes I will have to take when I move on to the university level. There’s no doubt in my mind I’ll come back to this area to live and work. I have no desire to live in a metro area. Previous Page |
