City of Sterling Water Quality Information

The NJC Cafeteria uses Sterling's water supply as is, just as do all the local restaurants in the area. Our produce and salad ingredients are washed in the water. Our dishes, pots, silverware, etc. are sanitized thoroughly. The Northeast Colorado Health Department inspects our cafeteria twice annually, and Sodexho conducts a complete audit of our cafeteria annually, as well. The water supply is not restricted for use in drinking or cooking or hygiene practice. The city, however, is required to notify customers that it has elevated levels of certain contaminants. We are all looking forward to a new water treatment plant that will be in place soon, which is expected to be the solution to the violations reported in the water supply findings.

Many students and others choose to drink bottled water or they fill gallon containers with water from one of several fill stations located around the city. Some choose not to drink out of fountains because of contaminants; others simply may not like the taste of Sterling's water. The food service offered in Pete's Retreat on campus has a reverse osmosis system which removes certain contaminants in the water and may taste better, as well.
