Partnership with Tax Help Colorado fills a vital need for families with incomes under $55,000

Sterling, Colo. – This tax season, Northeastern Junior College (NJC) is partnering with Denver-based Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 5, IRS-certified students will prepare and file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $55,000 a year.

On average, tax preparation in Colorado can cost $200—tax-filing services at Tax Help Colorado sites are completely free-of-charge. In addition to getting their taxes done for free, taxpayers may be eligible for valuable, refundable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. Tax preparers are trained to ensure the families they serve get the best refund possible. The program also helps students develop customer service skills, achieve practical, hands-on experience, serve their community and earn college credits.

Student volunteers at NJC are available by appointment or walk-in to help individuals and families who made $55,000 or less in 2018 to prepare their taxes. For more information call 970-521-6600 or visit GetAheadColorado.org

“The Tax Help program not only provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world context,” said Beth Kilmer, NJC Assistant Professor of Accounting and Site Supervisor, “it encourages them to become citizens who are more aware of and involved in the community around them.”

This free service will be offered at NJC from Feb. 5-Mar. 12, Tuesdays, 4-7 p.m., Saturdays, Feb. 16 and Mar. 2, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at NJC, 100 College Ave., Sterling, Colo. 80751, Phillips-Whyman Hall, room 115.

A list of all the Tax Help Colorado sites, as well as the locations of other free tax assistance sites in Colorado, is available by calling 2-1-1 or visiting GetAheadColorado.org.

In 2018, Tax Help Colorado volunteers prepared taxes for nearly 7,650 taxpayers who received more than $12.65 million in refunds; and saved taxpayers $1.5 million in tax preparation fees.
