February 28, 2018, Sterling, CO – Northeastern Junior College (NJC) takes pride in the success of its athletic teams and the academic accomplishments of students. On Tuesday, February 27, President Jay Lee honored 60 student athletes for their accomplishments off the court. During half-time of the men’s basketball game students were presented with Scholar Athlete Awards. To be awarded the Scholar Athlete award the student athlete must receive a 3.5 GPA in the fall semester of the academic year.

Tashika Burrell

Tashika Burrell, a freshman on the women’s basketball team, was one of the recipients of the Scholar Athlete Award. In the fifth grade she moved with her family from Kingston, Jamaica to Colorado where she played basketball all four years at Palmer High School in Colorado Springs and made State All-Academic First Team her junior and senior year. At NJC, Tashika is studying business and accounting, where she has excelled in earning a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in the Fall 2017 semester.

“Throughout high school I always put academics first, because anything could happen in basketball. You could get injured,” said Tashika. “I knew education would be there for me.”

Tashika has enjoyed her first year at NJC, the small class size and small town atmosphere fit her personality and she is not far from home. After she graduates from NJC, Tashika plans to continue her education at a 4-year institution and would like to open an affordable sporting facility.

Out of the 896 full-time students at NJC, 195 of those students are athletes. Including the 60 student athletes honored last night, NJC student athletes accounted for 28.9% of the Fall Honor Roll in 2017.
