Partnership with Tax Help Colorado fills a vital need for families with incomes under $54,000

Sterling, Colo. – This tax season, Northeastern Junior College (NJC) is partnering with Denver-based Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program. Beginning Thursday, February 1, IRS-certified NJC students will prepare and file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $54,000 a year.

In addition to getting their taxes done for free, taxpayers may be eligible for valuable, refundable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. Tax preparers are trained to ensure the families they serve get the best refund possible. The program also helps NJC students develop customer service skills, achieve practical, hands-on experience, serve their community and earn college credits.

“We are very proud to be actively involved in this wonderful program,” said, Jay Lee, President of Northeastern Junior College. “Working with the Piton Foundation gives the college another avenue of service to our community while providing an outstanding learning opportunity for our students.”

This free service will be offered at NJC from February 1-April 5, Thursdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday, February 10 and 24 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at NJC, 100 College Avenue, Sterling, Phillips Whyman Hall, room 112.

Tax Help Colorado operates 24 free tax sites statewide; last year, they provided free tax assistance to over 8,750 individuals, helping them claim nearly $14 million in tax refunds, including nearly $5 million from the EITC.  In addition, the program saved families more than $2.2 million in commercial tax preparation fees.
