August 29, 2017, Sterling, CO – The Peter L. Youngers Fine Arts Gallery in ES French Hall at Northeastern Junior College is pleased to present a group exhibition featuring a conceptual installation of related visual objects created by five contemporary artists. “Moving Targets & Shots in the Dark” will run from August 21, 2017-September 14, 2017 with a closing reception the last Thursday, September 14 from 5-7 p.m.

The artists features in the show: Diana Baumbach the Associate Professor of Foundations at the University of Wyoming, Tessa Dallarosa, Cullen Faber, Chris Parmelee and Oli Watt the Assoicate Professor of Printmedia at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. Curated by Dallarosa and Parmelee, the show complicates traditional notions of light and shadow, interior and exterior, serious and funny, jester and king.

The show includes a 25’ long vinyl stencil (Baumbach) as well as a sun fabricated in neon (Watt). Both use light as a medium to literally and figuratively alter the surrounding space. Faber’s “Furniture with Sand Dollar Necklace” constructs relationships by repeating forms found throughout the show, including circles, spheres, and their blobby cousins. “Prism,” a painting by Dallarosa, consists of layered fabrics, screenprinted paper, paper fasteners, and clear vinyl, refracts traditional notions of painting to include multiple materials, patterns, and surface qualities. Parmelee uses material puns and a pared down drawing style. His “King’s Blue” muddies intention with a simple deadpan stare, ominous yet playful. Like comedy, this show is about deflating ego, a play the jester is noted for. Only the jester can insult the King without being beheaded. Uninterested in the authority associated with the throne, the jester plays his own game, embracing a multiplicity of diverse and changing perspectives, becoming a moving target, and that makes him dangerous.

“Moving Targets and Shots in the Dark” will run through September 14, 2017.  Dallarosa and Parmelee will be giving an artist talk at the closing reception Thursday, September 14 from 5-7 p.m.  Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 8:30 to 5 pm.
