Sterling, CO, February 7, 2017– Northeastern Junior College (NJC) recently honored faculty and staff at the Spring In-service in January.

Each year NJC selects a teaching professional on campus to receive the coveted Faculty of the Year Award. Deb Walker, Accounting/Business Professor and truly dedicated mentor has received this award for 2017. Deb is very dedicated to learning the best practices to reach her students, she researches best practices, learns new software and different learning platforms.  Deb treats all students and co-workers with respect, and they genuinely appreciate her willingness to help.

Deb has been with NJC over fifteen years, starting her career as the Career-Technology Instructional Specialist. Deb graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Northern Colorado and earned her Master’s in Management from Regis University. She also has her credential as a special education teacher and has just recently earned her Graduate Certificate in Theology from Liberty Baptist Seminary. In addition to her duties as accounting/business faculty, Deb is the advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on campus, one of the site coordinators for the Tax Help Colorado program, as well as the State Curriculum Chair for Accounting. Deb and her husband Jim, own and operate a cattle ranch near New Raymer, Colorado.

Deb is truly a dedicated faculty member, and many students who have moved on have returned to share with her their gratitude for her help in preparing them for their field in accounting and finance.

Jennifer Linn, Adjunct Math Instructor has received the NJC Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award for 2017. Jennifer has been a phenomenal addition to the math department, students flock to her and adore her not just because she is kind, enthusiastic and supportive, but because they learn they don’t have to fear math. She also assists in the Excel Center and has enhanced the Comprehensive Learning Center. Jennifer joined the Comprehensive Learning Center Development Education Math program after retiring from School District 6 in Greeley. Jennifer and her husband Forrest, moved to the area in 2014 to be closer to their farm near Merino. “I feel very blessed to be a part of the NJC community. I have met so many wonderful co-workers and students, which makes coming here each day a privilege,” stated Linn.

Cindy Carey, Student Success Counselor has received the Administrative-Professional/Technical Employee of the Year for 2017. Cindy never says “no” to anything, she is willing to help anyone. She puts in long hours helping students with emotional and person dilemmas, without a strong metal health professional the campus would not function as effectively. Cindy has been the Counselor in the Student Success Office at NJC for over thirteen years, she loves her job and the people she gets to work with every day, both co-workers and students. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Spring and her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Denver. She has had a varied work background, including counseling for an adoption agency, working with middle school students in an alternative education setting, and working with adult male sex offenders in a group setting as well as individual counseling. In addition to her duties in the Student Success Office, Cindy sponsors two student organizations, Peer Helpers and co-sponsor of Crossroads. Prior to working at NJC, Cindy was able to be a stay at home mom for ten years. She is married to Brent Carey and they have 3 adult children, two of whom are in college and one who just graduated.

Kim Hooton, Accounting Technician II/Account Payable has received the NJC Classified Employee of the Year Award for 2017. Kim is always willing to help anyone on campus, she goes above and beyond her work duties. Kim has been with NJC for almost two years in the Business Office, she loves working for the college. Prior to coming to the college Kim worked at Cabela’s for 8 years in their Accounts Payable and Tax Departments. She has 3 children and is the proud Grammy of Kadence.

Deb, Jennifer, Cindy and Kim were also honored at the Colorado Community College Systems luncheon on Tuesday, February 07 in Denver.
