Kristy Long (left), former collegiate athletic standout and an alumnae of Northeastern Junior College, Kristy Long fails to tag out sophomore player Sally Holman on second base during last year’s Beat the Plainswomen fundraising co-rec tournament.Last year the action at times was a bit comical. You had men on base wearing wigs, as if to taunt the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen softball team. After all, bragging rights were on the line during the 1st Annual Beat the Plainswomen co-rec softball tournament. The event returns again this year on September 6 and 7th at Mason Field. It is a fundraiser for the college team and entries are now being sought.

Players are encouraged to put together a co-rec team to enter the tournament and test the play power of a group of talented, hard-working college athletes who will just be two weeks on campus when this tourney takes place.  If you’re successful in beating this Plainswomen team, your team will receive ‘We Beat the Plainswomen’ t-shirts and some bragging rights.

“You can have up to 15 players on your team, but you must have equal number of men and women, or have more women than men,” says Kristine Campo, head women’s softball coach at Northeastern. She goes on to explain that this is a fundraiser that’s meant to be fun. Games will run 55 minutes each. The umpires will be volunteers. Each batter will start with a 2-1 count and only three home runs per team per game will be allowed.  Cost per team is $150, and offers a four game guarantee.

Sometime during the tournament, there will be a Home-Run Derby taking place and the fee for it will be $10 per entry. All money raised by the tournament and the derby will go to help the Northeastern softball program pay for gear, travel expenses and other costs. Donations are welcome, as well. If you don’t want to play, but want to support the cause, you can do this as well.

Deadline for Beat the Plainswomen entries is Saturday, August 30th. You can call Campo to get more information at (970) 521-6618. You may find a team registration form on the college’s athletic website:   You’ll want to find the button on the homepage that says “Camps and Special Events” and click on it and then scroll down to the Beat the Plainswomen link.  The entry fee is due at the time of team registration. Checks should be made payable to NJC Softball.
