The frigid temperatures did not keep everyone at home as a nice crowd showed up to enjoy the NJC Winter Ensemble at Northeastern Junior College on Saturday evening. The college’s music department did not disappoint as a hour long show included the contemporary choir, the jazz band and some excellent soloists in action. One of the highlights of the evening was a performance of “Black Magic Woman” featuring Sterling’s Derek Karg on lead guitar. Colton Royer of Boulder did lead vocals on “Springsteen,” accompanied by Lathan Hikey, Hilea Swirn, Austin Ufferman and Celeste Delgado-Pelton. The NJC Jazz Band, under the direction of Lee Lippstrew, delivered six swinging Christmas songs, including Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. The musicians donned Christmas lights on their instruments which added to the fun of the evening. This was the first public performance in which the college’s music department was able to use new sound equipment purchased by the Russ Johnson Endowment. Concert goers enjoyed refreshments in the Peter L. Youngers Fine Art Gallery following the performance.
