Campus Safety Strategic Plan

Our mission is to create and maintain a safe and secure environment where teaching and campus life can thrive and succeed.

Our vision is to create a community culture that places a priority on safety and security by establishing guidelines, assigning responsibilities and promoting awareness of responses to emergencies that may affect the NJC community. The Safety & Security Committee is responsible for developing the NJC Emergency Operations Plan, which offers the guidelines to assist those dealing with crisis, including how to coordinate with external entities, and the provision of resources following an emergency to expedite the return of normal operations with minimal negative impact.

Goal #1

Increase the use of technology to enhance and improve the safety and security of the NJC campus community.
 Action Steps
 a. Install cameras in parking lots and on building exteriors
b. Install new exterior door building access, allowing buildings to be on constant lockdown and requiring the use of electronic methods of entry.
c. Continue to improve and enhance campus-wide emergency notification & communication (Alertus, Blackboard, and future methods of notification)
d. Enhance and improve the NJC website with safety & security information and notices
and timely warnings.
e. Though not necessarily specifically related to technology, consider adding additional campus security measures (i.e., call boxes, or the physical presence of security officers)

Goal #2

Improve campus wide communication of safety & security issues to faculty, staff and students through aggressive marketing efforts.
 Action Steps
 a. Communicate safety and security issues to campus on a regular, routine, ongoing   basis. Focus on one major issue a semester.
b. Have regular campaigns reminding faculty, staff & students to sign up for  notifications.
c. Communicate to faculty, staff & students the content from the campus emergency guidebooks and the SRP.

Goal #3

Provide professional and innovative safety and security training to college faculty, staff, and students.
Action Steps
a. Train building captains
b. Conduct a safety drill during the fall and spring semesters.
c. Provide training to faculty and staff at in-service trainings.
d. Provide training to students as part of orientation.

Goal #4

Solicit feedback from faculty, staff, and students following every drill.
Action Steps
a. Using survey monkey or other survey methods, ask campus employees and students to provide constructive feedback after each drill.
b. Compile the feedback responses, share them with the campus, and use the information to improve future drills.

Goal #5

Review the Emergency Management Operations Plan (EMPO) annually. Update and revise as needed, and as directed by CCCS to ensure that it remains a valuable tool to all faculty and staff, and to ensure that essential services and protocols are maintained and followed in a disaster, emergency, or crisis. Procedures shall be consistent with directives from CCCS.
