Student field trip to Invesco Field

Our physical education, recreation and wellness studies are part of an overall transfer program which can lead to employment in many careers related to health, human performance or sport studies.

Northeastern students who choose degrees in the areas of study spend their time on campus taking general class requirements but also learning about social recreation and leadership, sports law, and the analysis and teaching of various popular sports, among other topics. They become familiar with the breadth, scope and nature of human performance and/or sports professions.

Sports Medicine & Athletic Training

These are two very popular areas of study at Northeastern. NJC is home to high level competitors in the National Junior College Athletics Association's (NJCAA) Division I sports which means students have an ongoing real-life lab environment at their fingertips all of the time. They use what they learn in the classroom to help care for athletes in the gym and on the field.

The Jackson and Edwards Arena has a comprehensive lighting and sound system. With modern technology throughout, even the wooden floor of the gym is a suspended system allowing movement with motion to minimize wear and tear on joints during play.
In addition to games, this main arena is used for concerts, conventions, NJC's annual commencement and other large group functions. This gym can be one single large court or split to two regulation size courts.

The auxiliary gym, located at the opposite end of the building, provides a second area for varied activity. Day to day it is used for practice and play, but easily converts into a two-court tournament area with or without a center drape. It is ideal for team warm-up space, special program accommodations or a convention exhibit hall. Again, notice the large overhead door which allows big items to be moved into this area.
A batting cage for indoor baseball and softball practice may be lowered from the ceiling as needed. This gym floor, which also moves with motion, is striped for basketball, badminton, and indoor tennis play. Volleyball is frequently played here as well.

The upper level of the building has a cardiovascular work-out area. Full of cycles, cross trainers, treadmills, more weight machines and numerous specialized fitness tools, this area overlooks the main arena and has overhead televisions. The Event Center has a comprehensive Wellness Center. A large weight room on the main floor features a wide array of free weights and machines. The Cybex equipment is the best available and staff is here to develop personalized training plans for patrons.

It just makes sense.

We’ve been providing educational services to this area of   Colorado for 65 years. While students from all over the state, country and world make their way to Sterling to study at NJC, it seems that many of our area students think they need to leave here to find ‘something better.’ When it comes to an overall academic product, campus atmosphere, and being in a place geared totally toward individual student success, you’d be hard pressed to find a college any better equipped or inviting than Northeastern. And, we can save you some money, too. The reality is, students who want a four year degree can complete two years at NJC, save some money and get a solid collegiate foundation under them in the way of an associate’s degree, and then go virtually anywhere they want to go and finish out an advanced degree. It makes a lot of sense. Consider the fact that recent statistics show that less than 40% of those students who start a four year college degree will ever
finish a four year college degree—so starting out at a two year college is just plain smart on your student’s part.
