LEARN Program Commitment

LEARN’S commitment to the Latino communities it serves is to create and implement quality programming for the organization that aligns with the overall diversity goals of Northeastern Junior College. 

Purpose & Goals

Purpose

Students
Motivate Students at NJC to continue their studies, inform, encourage, and motivate high school students and their parents to make higher education a priority in their future, 

Collaborators
Partner with the Hispanic/Latino community  and collaborators to raise the awareness of the need for higher education and seek advice and feedback to improve the effectiveness of the program. 

Goals

To increase information to Latino high school students in the Sterling area for the purpose of increasing enrollment at Northeastern Junior College.

To identify Northeastern Junior College’s Latino student leaders that can assist in the recruitment process and provide another avenue to retain the student in college. (At this time there are no benchmark numbers.

Strategies for Recruitment

  • Increase awareness throughout the educational information system concerning challenges facing minorities students.
  • Close the information gap by widely disseminating accurate information about preparing and paying for college and more effectively target Students of Color.
  • Provide an appropriate level of financial aid, federal, state, institutional, and private to help Students of Color stay in high  school, and graduate from college.
  • Improve articulation between two- and four-year institutions of higher education.
  • Disseminate and promote the wider use of proven strategies for Students of Color to  achieve at high levels, and develop better strategies based on best practice.
  • Recruit and retain faculty and staff members who reflect the student body.

 

LEARN Organization

LEARN Council

Membership:

  • This volunteer group consists of Latino adults that are both Sterling area community leaders and role-models for the high school and college student populations NJC serves.  
  • Their role is to advise the LEARN administrators as to how current programs and activities might be improved or changed to better serve the students. 
  • They will provide a parent/community perspective that is important to the design of the programs offered and its effectiveness they are. 
  • The Advisory Council will be invited to attend and participate in all activities and events offered for the purpose of monitoring the progress of the programs and serve as role models to the students in attendance.
  • They will advocate for Latino educational achievement in higher education through enhancement via public understanding of the challenges Latinos face in accessing higher education and then addressing those challenges.
