Misti Lauer, ABE/GED/ESL Program Coordinator

I am a Sterling native and NJC alumnus. My husband, Tim, is also from Sterling, so we have decided that it is a perfect place to raise our two children. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Management and after working in the medical field as a surgical assistant and office manager for more than a decade, I sought work in the classroom to share my enthusiasm for learning with GED students. Prior to becoming the Program Coordinator, I was the Lead GED Instructor in 2003-2004, and substituted in the GED and ESL department.

I am married to Larry, a Coca-Cola account manager. We have two children, a fourteen-year-old daughter named Whitney, and a twelve-year-old son named Aaron. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but I got side-tracked earlier in life, and didn't pursue that goal until recently. In May 2004 I graduated from UNC with a Bachelor's Degree and Licensure in Elementary Education. I am excited that I am finally realizing my dream! I hope through teaching I can help others achieve their goals, too.

Cathy Fisher, Lead ESL Instr./GED Examiner

My name is Cathy Fisher and I am the Lead ESL Instructor and GED Chief Examiner. I was born in Bolivia, South America, where my parents taught English, Spanish, Math, and Science. Their influence and the experience of living in a foreign country greatly influenced my education and choice of career. My family moved to Sterling in 1997 in my senior year of high school. I completed two years at NJC, earning an Associates of Science. From there, I went on to Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas where I graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Communication Studies. I left college with a strong desire to teach in a small college setting and NJC has offered me a perfect match for my background and skills.
