Dorothy Corsberg Theatre

Laura Speaker behind the podium.Friends and family gathered on May 17th, nearly filling Dorothy Corsberg Theatre to celebrate nearly 41 students earning their General Equivalency Diplomas.  In 2008, 86 Northeast Colorado students earned their GED, including students from Julesburg, Wray, Yuma, and Holyoke.

Laura Speaker, NJC’s Chief Financial Officer (and former GED graduate) was the keynote speaker.  She encouraged the students to do five things: start their college education soon after receiving their GED, apply for scholarships if they do go to college, take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new or improve their skills, ask questions, and be kind hearted.

 GED Graduates recieve special recognition.

Following Speaker’s speech, several students were given special recognition. Twenty-three students were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society. In addition, 15 students were recognized for being in the National Top 10%.

Guest sepeaker Richard Reutzel.

Richard Reutzel, a former GED graduate and current student at NJC, addressed the graduates from his own personal viewpoint.  He commended the students on their strong work ethic and told them not to be afraid to go on.  “Do not be afraid to step through these doors and enjoy the amenities of having an education,” Reutzel said.

Students then walked across the stage to get their GEDs.

GED Graduation is scheduled for May 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dorothy Corsberg Theatre on NJC’s campus.
